I've designed this page to help you purchase the supplies that you'll need for this class. It includes some tips on Art Supply stores that you might use. I'm sure there are more in your area - these are just a few that I'm familiar with. Supply List and Advice
- You will need supplies #1 through #13 for our first day. All items will be reviewed in class.
- 1. Drawing Board: 20” x 26” or similar in size. To save money, you can buy a masonite board are at a hardware store, which can often cut these to your specifications. In this case, you’ll need to also purchase clips and a rubber band to keep paper attached to your masonite board.
- 2. Pad of Acid Free Drawing Paper: 18” x 24”, labeled as 90lb or heavier, medium or heavy texture, 50-100 sheets
- 3. Pad of Newsprint: 18” x 24”, 30 lbs or heavier, with tooth or with a “rough surface”, 50-100 sheets
- 4. Handheld Pencil Sharpener
- 5. Erasers: 1Kneaded and 1Plastic
- 6. Drawing Pencil Set: You can also buy pencils individually, however, you will need 6B, 4B, 2B, HB, F, 2H and 4H.
- 7. Masking or Blue Painters Tape: Available at hardware stores in the paitning section
- 8. 2-4 Colored Markers With Wide Tips
- 9. One Fine-Tipped, Felt Tip Marker: Any color will do, but I suggest black, blue, or purple
- 10. Soft or Medium Vine Charcoal: thick & thin (at least 2 of each)
- 11. Shammy: Available at automotive stores
- 12. Smudge stick: 1 thick
- 13. 5 Still Life Objects You’ll Enjoy Working With: I recommend old shoes, gourds, seashells, pinecones, small portable plants, etc.
- 14. Soft or Medium Charcoal Set
- 15. Medium Charcoal Pencils: 1 black and 1 white
- 16. Conte Crayons: 1 black, 1 white, 1 sepia
- 17. Paper Towels
- 18. Ebony Pencil
- 19. Sketch and wash pencil (suggested type: General’s)
- 20. Rounded Small or Medium Brush or Brush Pen for use with ink, charcoal, and conte crayons
Optional Supplies: Here are a few helpful supplies if you’d like to compliment your set of tools
- 1. Photos or resource materials (illustrations, calendars, photocopies of things you’d like to draw or collage, etc.)
- 2. Dish sponge with scrubber
- 3. Watercolor Pencils (suggested type: General's Kimberly Watercolor Pencil Set) or Water Soluble Oil Pastels Or Crayons, sometimes these are called Watercolor Sticks (suggested type: Neocolor II Water Soluble Crayons)
- 4. Watercolor Brush or Brush Pen: Medium Rounded Brush
- 5. Spray bottle for water, with an adjustable sprayer (fine/splatter)
- 6. India Ink
- 7. Bamboo Ink Pen
- 8. Plastic straw
- 9. Gloves: Nitrile, or latex, vinyl: Boxes of 100 can be purchased from hardware stores like Home Depot in the painting department
- 10. Pastels
- 11. Additional textured materials: old forks, combs with varying tooth, old toothbrush, orange net bags….
- 12. Colored Pencils (suggested type: Berol Prismacolor)
